Horticulture & Ecology Lab Home / Academics / Horticulture & Ecology Lab Evergreen is a Green School Evergreen Academy is proud to be a certified Green School. This means that we work hard to help the environment! This year, we started a school garden that we can use for science and social studies lessons. Becoming a Green School takes a lot of work. Here is what we did: Created a Green Team to lead the way. Chose a big project to focus on—our School Garden! Made changes to help the environment. Checked how our changes made a difference. Shared our story with others. Celebrated our Green School certification. Our school garden is amazing! It has rain barrels, a birdbath, birdhouses and feeders, a butterfly house, a chicken coop, a composter, a worm bin, raised garden beds, a greenhouse, and even an outdoor classroom! Certified Wildlife Habitat Our school grounds are a Certified Wildlife Habitat! That means we have worked hard to make sure animals have what they need to live here. The National Wildlife Federation gave us this certification because we have food, water, shelter, and safe spaces for animals to raise their young. Ethnobotanical Garden Our 4th graders have created an Ethnobotanical Garden at our school. Ethnobotany means learning how people have used plants in the past and still use them today. For example, some native plants are used to make medicine, food, or materials like dyes and tools. In 2015, the 4th graders started this garden with plants they researched and identified. Some of the plants in the garden include Salal, Red Elderberry, Red Twig Dogwood, Oregon Grape, Irish Moss, Scotch Moss, Wild Mock Orange, Sword Fern, Common Snowberry, Evergreen Huckleberry, Wild Ginger, Bunchberry, Creeping Mahonia, and Bearberry! Other Fun Facts! Our 1st Grade Garden is a certified Pollinator Habitat. Our 2nd Grade Garden is a certified Butterfly Habitat.
